When you import Basmati from India, the variety on the contract is not automatically the rice that leaves the mill. Mixing happens in shared storage, on milling lines that run more than one cultivar, and in lots that get topped up to fill a container. Buyers in the UK, the EU, the UAE, and the US now treat that gap as a compliance problem. If the DNA profile does not match an approved Basmati variety, or if non-Basmati grain exceeds the allowed share, the shipment can fail inspection, lose the name on the label, or sit in a port hold while you argue over a claim.

Why Basmati authenticity slips, and what it costs you

Basmati is a named product with a defined set of varieties. That name sells at a premium over ordinary long-grain rice, so the incentive to blend cheaper grain into a Basmati lot is obvious. Once a container is sealed and on the water, you cannot sort it back into pure and impure bags. You either accept a quality claim, relabel, or fight a rejection.

Public analysts in the UK have tested retail packs for years. The UK Basmati Code of Practice now allows no more than 7% non-Basmati rice in a sample, down from 20% two decades ago. A lawful exporter also needs an IEC from DGFT and FSSAI licensing. DNA purity testing in plain language

Every grain of rice carries a genetic fingerprint. Labs use microsatellite markers, also called SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) markers, to match that fingerprint against known Basmati varieties. You are not asking whether the rice looks long and smells pleasant. You are asking whether this sample is an approved cultivar such as Pusa 1121 or Pusa 1509, or something that only looks the part.

DNA tells you what the rice is. It does not tell you how it cooks, how wet it is, or how much broken grain is in the bag.   4. Approve a production sample. Keep a retained sample in India and send you a matching lot.
  5. Watch milling and packing. Do not wait for a finished container to start quality control.

Sampling is the quiet failure point. A lab can only test what it receives. If bags are pulled from the front row of a godown and the mixed grain sits at the back, your DNA result will look better than the container. Independent inspectors exist for that reason. What a defensible Basmati file looks like

Verified is not a badge on a listing. It is a file you can hand to a retailer or a customs broker:

  • MRL and food-safety results for the actual destination
  • Inspection, seal, and stuffing records

If any of those items is missing, you do not yet have Basmati you can defend. Wholesale supply into the US, UK, UAE, or other markets fails in ordinary ways: moisture above spec after a humid packing day, broken grain from aggressive milling, a pesticide that cleared Indian limits but not EU MRLs, or a DNA result that shows a non-approved variety in the blend. FAQ

Does APEDA registration prove the rice is authentic Basmati?

No. APEDA registration is required to export. Authenticity still depends on variety identity, usually confirmed by DNA fingerprinting, plus the physical grade. Registration without testing is permission to ship, not proof of what is in the bag.

How much non-Basmati rice is allowed?

Under the UK Code of Practice, non-Basmati rice must be less than 7% of the sample, and identified Basmati varieties must be on the approved list. Other markets may write tighter contract limits. Put the number in your purchase order so the mill is not guessing.

Is visual grain inspection enough?
